First-Beginning at the ears brush all the hair forward toward the nose with the slicker brush. As you identify mats insert the tangle splitter between the mat and the skin and pull away from the dog using a sawing motion if necessary. Repeat this several times until the mat is thoroughly broken up. Using the medium metal comb comb out the small sections of the mat. (Common Areas of matting are behind the ears, under the front legs & behind the hind legs in the pantaloon area.)
Using the two-level de-matting comb thoroughly comb the dog out from head to tip of tail-top & bottom. Fill the ears with Oxyfresh Ear cleaner-and massage from behind the ear to help the cleaning action. Using a Q-Tip gently swab the inside of the ear cleaning the folds until most of the liquid is removed. Now you’re ready to begin the bath!
Second-Thoroughly wet the dog with warm water making sure not to get water in it’s nose. Apply the shampoo & lather, then rinse & repeat. Wrap the dog in the first towel, and rub most of the water out of it’s coat. Use the second towel to rub-dry the dog before blow drying. Check the ears for oil, dirt or exudate-and using a Q-Tip moistened with the Oxyfresh ear cleaner clean the outer portion and into the crevices of the ear. (If there is dark oily secretion or excessive dirt take the vet to check for ear mites or an ear infection-they appear similar. ) Next-using your finger or a Q-Tip apply a small amount of the Oxyfresh Gel to the dog’s teeth and gums-rubbing in a circular motion until no excess is felt.
Third-Using the Pin Brush & the blow dryer-face the dog away from you and start behind the ears blowing the hair dry-brushing toward the front of the dog. Turn the dog over and blow dry the tummy area and front bib. Comb out thoroughly with the two-level de-matting comb.
Fourth-With the barber scissors (using your thumbnail to protect the dog’s ear leather) cut the hair across the top of the ears in a ROUNDED teddy bear form. Blend into the hair around the head and face into the bib using the thinning shears. Next trim the hair away from the dog’s anus with the barber shears about ½ inch. Shorten and sculpt the surrounding hair back around the anus and top of hips-then shorten the hair on the back 1/3 of the tail to form a horsheshoe-top & bottom-VERY GRADUAL blending into surrounding coat on the body. This keeps them clean and is the proper trim for a Pom. Brush the hair upward on the lower portion of the back leg (called the hock) using the slicker brush or the medium comb up to the knee (where it bends) and trim it parallel to the leg-leaving ¼” to ¾” of coat-depending upon the amount of coat on the rest of the dog-or whether they will be in the show ring-or playing outddors. In the show ring-leave more-in the backyard playing-leave less hair on the hocks. Next-using the blunt baby scissors trim the hair around the foot in a round cat-like form-and trim the hair from between the pads of the foot. Trim (not too close) behind the front paws up to the little bump of the pad you will find on the back of the front leg just above the foot-trim the foot in a round cat-like form-and trim the hair from between the pads of the front feet. Next brush the hair upward on the top of each foot-and using the thinning shears trim the stray hairs away until the foot looks neat and round blended into the leg coat above it. Trim the nails back EVEN with the pads of the feet. A good rule is if a Pom’s nails click on the floor when it walks-they’re too long. Long nails aren’t just unsightly-they’re crippling! They force the bones in the Pom’s foot into an unnatural position and break them down-thereby crippling the Pom. If you can’t cut them yourself-have the vet or groomer do it-ONCE A MONTH!!!
Ideally-the nails should be checked and trimmed back every TWO WEEKS. Thorough bathing and grooming should be done every 3 months-with baby powder dry baths (Dust it in-brush it out thoroughly) done –(care being taken not to get the powder in their lungs) to freshen up and “dry-clean” in between baths. Teeth should be brushed with the Oxyfresh Pet Gel at least weekly-with the Oxyfresh Oral Hygiene Solution-(1-800-223-7374 ) added to their drinking water EVERY DAY-as their only source of drinking water. Toy dogs are known for dental problems-and Poms are no exception. With this kind of preventive care-your Pom will keep it’s teeth into the teen years-and without this care-they will probably lose most of their teeth before their fifth birthday-and have the infections and bad breath associated with canine periodontal disease. The cost for this daily care is low- but the price is high if you don’t follow this regimen.
Pomeranians have been bred for years in the USA to grow huge coats. Taken care of properly they are among the most beautiful of all dogs. If their coat, nutrition or health care are neglected they become miserable and unhealthy. Feed, groom & care for them well and they will reward you with many years of love, devotion and lowered vet expenses. The suggestions in this puppy manual are geared toward helping you do EXACTLY that.
